About Dr. Lawson

Hi there! I am so glad you found my page.

I am Sarah, a school psychologist.

What does that mean?

It means I have specific training and experience related to, you guessed it, school. I chose to go into this field because for as long as I can remember, I have loved school. I also remember always having an innate sense of justice, empathy, and compassion. Those characteristics drew me into the field of psychology, and by the time I was a teenager, I knew I would be a public servant, a helping professional. There was no other choice for me. So, I had to come face to face with the eight-year-old and 13-year-old versions of myself that wanted to be a professional basketball player and astronaut. I told them, Keep dreaming big, but those dreams aren’t it. In all seriousness, though, when I learned about school psychology, I thought it was a literal dream come true. I did not have to choose between the field of education and the field of psychology. I could have it alllllll.

Fast forward to 2013, when I graduated from UCF with a graduate degree in School Psychology. Since then, I have been working as a school psychologist. After about five years in the role in public schools, I decided it was time to go back to school. I saw too many systemic issues and felt compelled to work to change them. In 2021, I graduated from FSU with my doctorate. I then pivoted to working on faculty at UCF, where I had an amazing three years of learning alongside future school psychologists. I got to teach and train students, but learned a great deal too. In 2023, I decided to finally really put my license to use and open a private practice. I did not plan on necessarily going “all in,” because I enjoyed working in higher education. I had been working on testing projects and did contracting work with school districts, but I missed really connecting with people in person and 1:1, especially kids. I thought working in my own practice during the day and teaching at night would be perfect! Then, I accepted a faculty position in another state, and was all set to move and start our new adventure in the Fall of 2024. As that time approached, it became clearer that God must have had other plans. I was essentially forced into working full time in my practice. It has felt scary, risky, and intimidating, but here I am. I have the heart of a public servant who now has to be business minded. However, I never plan on losing sight of what I feel is my purpose: serving families, communities, schools, and my VIP: kids. I aim to treat each client with the same level of care, respect, and affirmation that I would for a member of my family.

On a more personal level, I do have a family. I am a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, and mother. I currently have two kids two and under, and the most amazing fourth-grader. As a family, we enjoy going to theme parks, dancing around the house, watching movies, and playing games. During this season of life, I rarely have free time, but when I do, I enjoy reading, going for walks, taking pictures, and spending time with friends and family. This season of my life has also been sponsored by coffee. I prefer it iced, since, well, I am in Florida.

I hope to hear from you soon. I love what I do and chances are you will love the work I do! :)

Keeping the Client at the Center is the Goal.

At LEAPS with Lawson, it is all about recognizing and building individual strength and resiliency.
